BASF recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its bio-based polymer ecoflex® (PBAT: polybutylene adipate-terephthalate). Introduced to the plastics market in 1998, it is the world's first biodegradable and certified compostable polymer. Since then, customers have come to know and trust ecoflex® for its consistently high quality and performance. BASF continues to invest in Ecoflex® and has developed a portfolio of bio-based polymers unrivaled in the industry. ecoflex® is available in a variety of grades, including ecoflex® based on fossil-based raw materials F and the partially biobased ecoflex® FS and FG. All BASF PBAT product grades are tested to the most stringent global standards including EN 13432, AS4736 and ASTM 6400) industrial compostable certification. In addition, ecoflex® is biodegradable by microorganisms under home composting conditions as well as in agricultural soils (EN 17033).
BASF’s copolyester is one of the few compostable polymers that complies with European food contact regulations and is certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ecoflex® is the base polymer for BASF’s certified compostable compound ecovio®. With compounding capabilities in all regions, BASF can deliver best-in-class material performance and customized services to support global film, packaging and agricultural markets.
In addition to ecoflex® materials, BASF offers customers additional advantages including excellent regulatory support, compliance with global supply chain regulations and extensive application development experience gained as a market pioneer. Marcel, Head of Global Business Management Biobased Polymers, BASF Philipp Barth said: “We are proud to be a pioneer in the biopolymer market, thinking about circular economy solutions at a time when they were not yet widely available. Since its launch 25 years ago, ecoflex® has provided our customers with a high level of quality and consistent performance and enable many of the compostable applications on the market today. We look forward to continuing to shape this industry and supporting our valued customers and partners around the world. As a trusted partner to major brands , we develop innovative packaging solutions based on ecoflex® to meet new market demands. For example, in 2023 we launched the new ecovio® grade, certified as compostable for home and industry, extending the service life of paper packaging. "
ecoflex® is an ideal blend for the production of plastics from renewable raw materials such as polylactic acid (PLA) and starch, making many applications possible. ecoflex® therefore provides the certified compostable BASF compound ecovio® with special material properties such as flexibility. Studies show that ecovio® has advantages in food production, packaging and shelf life, as well as in the collection of food waste. These advantages are based on the material's biodegradability in commercial and home composting as well as in agricultural soils: food waste is reduced, nutrients are returned to the soil through composting, and the accumulation of persistent microplastics in agricultural soils is avoided. This helps to close the nutrient cycle through organic matter recycling, thereby enabling a circular economy.
