Oleyl alcohol is a colorless or light yellow oily liquid. The melting point is 6-7℃, the boiling point is 205-210℃ (2kPa), the relative density is 0.8489 (20/4℃), and the refractive index is 1.4606. Soluble in ethanol and ether, insoluble in water. There are irritating fumes when heated. It can be used as a raw material for organic synthesis and special surfactants, and can be used to produce oil additives, cold-resistant auxiliary plasticizers, lubricants and solvents, etc.
The sources of raw materials for synthetic oleyl alcohol include the following:
Before 1973, oleyl alcohol mainly came from spermaceti oil, thus damaging the resources of sperm whales. Currently, it is produced from oleic acid and its esters (usually methyl ester) obtained from other natural oils;
Oleic acid is generally produced from beef tallow and olive oil. Butter contains 43~45% oleic acid and 1~5% linoleic acid, and olive oil contains 61~63% oleic acid and 16~20% linoleic acid;
Canadian Canola oil contains approximately 60% oleic acid, 20% linoleic acid and 10% linolenic acid;
Palm oil contains 38~42% oleic acid and 10~12% linoleic acid;
Tal The oil contains approximately 60% and 38% linoleic acid.
