Borouge launches the first sustainable solutions for the automotive industry containing up to 70% recycled materials

● Newly launched products designed for automotive exterior applications, meeting the automotive industry's evolving need for sustainable solutions

● These products, manufactured at Borouge China’s compounding plant in Shanghai, reinforce the company’s commitment to sustainable development

August 8, 2023 - Borouge SA, a leading petrochemical company providing innovative and differentiated polyolefin solutions, and Borealis, the world's leading polyolefin producer, launch two applications Sustainable polymer products for the automotive industry add another dimension to the sustainable development of the two companies. Containing up to 70% recycled materials, these products are the first sustainable products for the automotive market developed at Borouge China's Shanghai Modification Plant (CMP) and have recently received ISO 14067 carbon footprint certification.

Rainer Hoflin, CEO of Borouge Pte Ltd, said: "These latest product launches are part of our strong commitment to sustainability. Through the use of recycled materials and the development of low-carbon products, We show how circular economy goals can be achieved today, with real results. We are proud of our dedicated and talented team, who are empowering sustainable development and helping the automotive industry to quickly achieve a low-carbon transition with innovative solutions. "

The new polypropylene (PP) solution contains up to 70% post-consumer recycled material (PCR) and is ISO 14067 certified for its carbon footprint. via TÜV Rheinland* Rheinland) full product life cycle (from cradle to gate) testing, new products reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, while still being able to achieve performance and quality comparable to virgin materials. Adding a high proportion of PCR materials to raw materials meets the growing demand for recycling and optimizes the use of precious natural resources.

The first solution, GC3565SYC, is a glass fiber reinforced polypropylene containing 50% PCR, excellent performance, easy processing, and long-term heat aging resistance. With these properties, the product is ideal for automotive underbody panels, bumper mounts and structural components. With a carbon footprint reduced by 28% compared to virgin material, this product can replace virgin material currently produced in Borouge's compounding plant without compromising quality standards.

The second solution, ED0701SYC, is an unfilled polypropylene material that does not contain talc or glass fibers, designed for the manufacture of wheel covers and other exterior trim parts, and contains a 70% post-consumer polyethylene and polypropylene blend. Compared with virgin materials, the product achieves a balance of rigidity and impact while reducing the carbon footprint by 32%. Along with good processability and stability, this product brings an excellent appearance to exterior applications.

Wang Yanbin, Senior Vice President of Borouge South Asia commented: "The demand for innovative solutions in the automotive industry is increasing, which reflects that sustainable development has become the focus of the industry. Correspondingly, our customers are actively seeking new ways, Incorporate sustainable polyolefin products into their latest models. At Borouge, we continue to develop innovative products that bring multiple benefits to our customers while helping them transition to a more sustainable model.”

Borouge's compounding plant was put into operation in 2010, providing high-quality compounding products and testing support for customers in the automotive industry. The factory has advanced laboratories and equipment for the development of new products. In 2010, the factory's initial production capacity was 50,000 tons per year, and the current annual production capacity is 90,000 tons, an increase of 80% compared with the previous production capacity.
