Origin Materials is a leading carbon-negative materials company with the goal of advancing the world’s transition to sustainable materials; Terphane is Tredegar
A subsidiary of Corporation, is the world leader in specialty PET polyester film (“BOPET”). The two companies have announced a strategic partnership to jointly produce sustainable high-performance bio-based polymer films.
As part of the collaboration, Terphane has signed a multi-year capacity booking agreement to purchase advanced bio-based polymer PEF for the production of films, including food and beverage packaging and high-value industrial applications. BOPEF is both a biaxially oriented PEF and BOPET is a biaxially oriented PET. These stretched polymer films are favored for their strength, clarity, barrier and electrical insulation properties.
Origin Materials Co-CEO Rich
“We are excited to be working with Terphane, a trusted global thin film leader with a broad range of customers and partnerships,” said Riley. A zero-carbon materials economy. This partnership marks Origin’s
Materials has made further progress in its mission to advance the world’s transition to sustainable materials. ”
Terphane Global R&D Director Marcos
“The development of this film is critical to our ability to meet the new global demand for sustainable flexible packaging solutions,” said Vieira. The film, made in part of PEF, has all the traditional properties of regular PET film, including post-consumer recyclability. .In addition, PEF also has excellent heat resistance and excellent barrier properties, which can extend the shelf life of packaged products. Initial tests in the United States have proved that this material performs well on extrusion lines.”
Origin Materials’ patented technology platform represents a potential breakthrough in cost competitiveness and commercialization of low-carbon PEF. origin
PEF is made from furandicarboxylic acid (“FDCA”), a polymer that combines sustainability and packaging performance characteristics, including enhanced barrier properties. origin
Materials’ PEF is expected to be 100% plant-based, fully recyclable, have attractive economics and a significantly reduced carbon footprint, be stronger and better than petroleum-based materials widely used today Excellent thermal performance and stronger barrier performance.
