● European energy companies (European
Energy) is building the world’s largest carbon dioxide to green methanol plant with an annual capacity of 32,000 tons
● End customers of the methanol plant include shipping giant Maersk, Lego Group and Novo Nordisk
● Due to its high activity and good stability, MegaMax catalyst is especially suitable for green methanol production
August 8, 2023 – Clariant’s Catalysts business unit continues to promote the construction of demonstration lighthouse projects for energy transition. European Energy chooses Clariant MegaMax
DCARB methanol synthesis catalyst is used in the world’s largest e-methanol project. The methanol plant, located in Kasso, Denmark, is scheduled to start production in late 2023. With Clariant catalysts, the plant can produce 32,000 tons of green e-methanol per year from carbon dioxide. Why choose Clariant MegaMax
DCARB catalyst, because it has been verified to have extremely high activity and stability under the extremely harsh process conditions of carbon dioxide conversion to methanol. Most of the annual output of the methanol plant has been booked by the shipping giant Maersk, which will provide Maersk with 10,000 tons of green methanol per year as the power fuel for the company’s first carbon-neutral fleet. The rest of the green methanol will be supplied to Lego Group and Novo Nordisk.
Hans Georg, Global Vice President, Syngas and Fuels, Clariant Catalysts
Anfang, said: “We are proud to be part of pioneering projects in European energy. Over the past 10 years, Clariant Catalysts has continued to develop Power-to-Chemicals (Power-to-X) technologies including green methanol. As a substitute for shipping marine fuel, green methanol has great potential and is expected to become a key factor in promoting carbon reduction in the shipping industry and realizing energy transition.”
Anders Brendstrup, Vice President, European Energy Corporation
Added: “We are very pleased to cooperate with Clariant. Clariant’s well-known professional experience and advanced products fit perfectly with our vision to promote the green energy transition. The cooperation between the two parties not only shows many advantages in this pioneering project, And the same in future collaborations.”
European Energy was founded in 2004 with the goal of promoting the green transition and developing sustainable, fossil fuel-free energy solutions. The multinational company has invested heavily in solar and wind energy projects, as well as energy-to-chemicals (Power-to-X) technology and carbon capture technologies. European Energy produces about 1,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources per year.
Clariant MegaMax
DCARB catalyst has better low-temperature activity and stronger stability required for green methanol production, and is an ideal solution for the energy conversion methanol project of European energy. Even at extremely low reactor temperature and pressure conditions, the catalyst has excellent activity. Additionally, the MegaMax catalyst is well suited for pure CO2 conditions, enabling extremely high conversions when combined with green hydrogen feedstocks. Its excellent selectivity suppresses the formation of by-products in the final product, greatly improving the sustainability and economic benefits of the green methanol synthesis process.
Clariant’s MegaMax catalysts are extremely active and stable, making them ideal for green methanol production.
