Trelleborg, a Swedish developer of precision seals, bearings and polymer parts, has launched its new H2Pro range of high-performance hydrogen sealing materials.
Designed to withstand high-pressure environments across a wide range of temperatures, the materials include a new ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and a special thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) for extremely low temperatures.
The product’s properties also make the material impermeable, allowing it to better withstand rapid gas decompression.
James Simpson, Director of Trelleborg’s Global Energy Division, reviews its new EBT25 (EPDM) and Zurcon H2Pro
ZLT (TPU) said: “Hydrogen plays an important role in the transition to a carbon-neutral world, both as a fuel source and as a storage medium for surplus energy from renewable energy sources.”
Due to the inherent properties of hydrogen, it is difficult to seal and store, presenting challenges to the broad market.
These challenges include penetration and leakage, since hydrogen is the simplest element with the smallest molecular structure. Another challenge is rapid gas decompression (RGD), where hydrogen gas from high-pressure systems can be absorbed into the seal.
If the pressure in the system is suddenly released, the gas in the seal can expand, potentially causing the seal to blister and rupture as the gas tries to escape.

“Due to the challenging sealing requirements of hydrogen, Trelleborg is innovating new materials and application-specific solutions to support a variety of industries involving hydrogen, including energy generation, aerospace, off-highway,” said Simpson. , truck/bus, chemical transportation and marine industries. As a long-time global leader in polymer and elastomer solutions, we are well positioned to be our customers’ preferred sealing partner for hydrogen.”
According to the company, it uses advanced testing equipment to evaluate materials for oxygen and ozone aging, hydrogen compatibility, leakage, penetration and ability to withstand rapid gas decompression, as well as compliance with relevant international standards.
