On August 15, the BASF® Little Chemist Chongqing Station was officially launched at the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum. This year’s BASF Little Chemist activity will focus on the themes of “Green Printing” and “Climate Protection”, bringing two interesting interactive experiments, entertaining and educational, guiding children to explore the mysteries of chemistry in daily life, leading them to pay attention to sustainable development development of this important issue.
BASF has long been committed to promoting popular science education for children in China. In 2002, BASF introduced the Little Chemists activity to China, and by the end of 2022, more than 200,000 children have participated in it. At the launching ceremony of Chongqing station, 24 children from the surrounding communities of BASF’s Chongqing base were invited to participate. Through interactive experiments, they feel the magical charm of science.
Dr. Nuowen Yang, Vice President of BASF and General Manager of BASF Polyurethanes (Chongqing) Co., Ltd., said: “BASF is committed to providing children with safe and interesting scientific experiences through the activities of little chemists. The theme of this year’s experiment is consistent with BASF’s consistent sustainable development. The development concept coincides with each other, and we hope that children can fully enjoy the fun of chemistry and stimulate their creativity and curiosity in the activity.”
At the launching ceremony, BASF also announced to donate 300 popular science picture books “Cooling the Earth—Being a Low-Carbon Family” to the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum, which will be used to support the science education activities of the Science and Technology Museum.
Zhu Jiayi, Chairman and General Manager of Chongqing Science and Technology Museum Management Co., Ltd., said: “We believe that science education is very important to cultivate the creativity and innovation ability of young people. We have created a scientific world full of exploration spirit and experimental fun. In the future, we look forward to continuing to cooperate with BASF to carry out more and more innovative science education activities.”
In 2008, BASF’s little chemists landed in Chongqing for the first time and appeared in the “Germany and China Walking Together” event. Since 2013, BASF has cooperated with Chongqing Science and Technology Museum to jointly promote this summer popular science education activity for students in Chongqing and surrounding areas. This year, more than 50 college students from well-known universities such as Peking University, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Ningbo University and Southwest University will become on-site volunteer teachers to guide the children to complete the experiment.
2023 BASF® Little Chemist Chongqing Station Activity Arrangement:
Magical ink printing (45 minutes, suitable for 6-12 years old)
As one of the great inventions of the working people in ancient China, printing has created conditions for the widespread dissemination and exchange of knowledge, and has become inseparable from daily life. This year, Dr. Dudu will lead the children to understand the necessary wetting and adhesion phenomena in the printing process, and use hand-made ink to print patterns on plastic folders, and experience the magic of printing together.
Cool experience (45 minutes, suitable for 6-12 years old)
Global warming is a serious problem facing mankind at present. In this experiment, the children will make a cold insulation layer for ice water, build a simple circuit for electric cooling, and make a gel that changes color with the temperature, so as to truly feel the impact of temperature changes. I hope that through the experiment, the children can understand the importance of sustainable development, and take action to be a low-carbon family and “cool down” the earth.
