BASF has announced that it will invest in the production of water-based anode binders to support the lithium-ion battery industry by retrofitting two existing dispersion plants located in Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces in China. In addition to the existing product portfolio, the two plants will produce two innovative anode binder products: Licity® and Basonal based on modified styrene-butadiene copolymer emulsions (SBR)
Power®. It is expected to start production in mid-2023.

Although the negative electrode binder of ion battery accounts for a small proportion in the battery material, it has an important impact on the performance and stability of the battery. BASF’s water-based negative electrode binder is known for its good performance and stable quality, providing sustainable solutions for customers in the lithium battery industry. BASF’s innovative adhesive products can effectively increase battery capacity, improve cycle stability, and reduce battery charging time. This investment is in line with the growing demand in the lithium-ion battery market, including the field of electric vehicles.

The investment will produce a range of high performance anode binders: Licity® and Basonal
Power®, a powerful addition to the existing product portfolio. Mirian Tiemi, Vice President of Dispersants Business Asia Pacific, BASF
Zanchetta-Sbragia, said: “Our customers need suppliers with stable supply, high-quality products and competitive prices. Our growing innovative products and providing local testing services will help customers gain a competitive advantage in the market.”

Andreas Fu, Senior Vice President of Dispersions Asia Pacific, BASF
Fechtenkoetter said: “We are very pleased to support customers in the rapid development of energy storage and electric vehicles. At the same time, we will further strengthen BASF’s position as one of the most reliable battery material suppliers in the Asia-Pacific region.”

The binders produced by BASF are specially designed to overcome the application limitations of lithium-ion batteries, such as performance at low temperatures. They are water-based binders with high colloidal stability and good compatibility with secondary binders such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Our adhesives are characterized by excellent processability and excellent coating properties. In addition, they also possess excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties.

BASF’s Dispersions business unit operates three production units in China. The dispersion production bases in Jiangsu and Guangdong started operations in 2002 and 2012, respectively.
