The Southwest Research Institute is the first research institute in China to carry out research on low-pressure methanol synthesis technology and synthesis catalysts. The research on this technology has successfully broken the monopoly of foreign companies in low-pressure methanol synthesis technology, and has won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Ministry of Chemical Industry for many times. The second prize of scientific and technological progress, the highest international gold medal of the Einstein World Invention Expo, etc., was listed as a national key promotion project of scientific and technological achievements by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1996. In recent years, based on the needs of the country and the industry, Southwest Research Institute has kept up with the forefront of the development of methanol synthesis technology and catalyst technology in the world, and continued to improve the performance of methanol synthesis technology and catalyst.

01. Successfully completed the 72-hour performance assessment

From December 16 to 19, 2022, the 1.8 million tons/year coal-to-methanol plant of China Energy Group adopted the XNC-98-5 methanol synthesis catalyst independently developed by Southwest Research Institute, and successfully completed the 72-hour performance assessment.

02. All indicators meet the requirements

On December 26, the load of the device increased to 108%, the output of MTO grade methanol reached 259t/h, and all the process indicators met the process requirements.

03. A major breakthrough has been made

Under the same load, the single-pass conversion rate is better than that of foreign catalysts, and the selectivity of crude methanol is higher, marking a major breakthrough in the localization of synthesis catalysts for large-scale coal-to-methanol plants.

At present, the DAVY radial water-cooled synthesis tower process is adopted in China. The total production capacity of large-scale methanol plants that have been built and are under construction is as high as 40 million tons. Most of the synthetic catalysts are still using imported catalysts, which require a lot of money to import every year, and there are still supply cycles. Long-term and key technologies are subject to human risks. The winning of the bid marks that the methanol synthesis catalyst developed by Southwest Research Institute has once again been recognized by the market. The Southwest Institute will continue to implement the concept of "science first", continue to make efforts and in-depth research in the research and development, preparation and application of methanol synthesis catalysts, and strive to promote the localization of large-scale methanol synthesis catalysts, injecting strong momentum into the progress of the domestic coal chemical industry.
