On April 18, at the 35th China International Plastics and Rubber Industry Exhibition, Sinopec officially released a series of new products of “Specialized, Specialized and New”. Among them, POE elastomer adopts a complete set of technologies independently developed by Sinopec from catalyst to product processing and application, and begins to build industrial equipment. Sinopec is the first technology patent provider in China with a complete set of independent intellectual property rights of POE.

Sinopec took advantage of the advantages of large corps operations. Led by the Science and Technology Department of the group company, since 2010, it has organized research institutes to carry out laboratory research work, and then carried out engineering technology development. In September 2022, the 1,000-ton/year POE pilot plant successfully completed the process and produced qualified products at Sinopec Maoming Branch.

POE is produced through a solution polymerization process using metallocene catalysts, and Sinopec has created a POE catalyst system with independent intellectual property rights. Previously, foreign companies had very strict coverage of POE catalyst structure patents, and their production technology had been monopolized by foreign companies for a long time, and their products were completely dependent on imports.

POE is polyolefin elastomer, which is one of the materials with the lowest density among synthetic materials. It has good processing performance and easy recycling performance. Compared with rubber, its production and processing application process is more green and environmentally friendly. It can be widely used in automobiles, building materials, and medical treatment. It is the key core material for the preparation of a new generation of photovoltaic film.

At this stage, domestic POE has not yet achieved industrialized production, but major chemical companies such as Wanhua Chemical and Satellite have announced new POE production capacity, and the technology is self-developed.

As of December 2022, the planned production capacity of POE particles in China is about 2.1 million tons per year. Most enterprises have made steady progress through “pilot test-scale-up”. For example, Satellite Chemical stated on the investor interaction platform on January 13 that the POE project independently developed by the company is being implemented, and the small-scale test products have been sent to downstream customers for testing. Among them, α-olefin, the core raw material of POE, has built a 1,000-ton/year plant and will be put into trial production soon.

Buying land, Chengzhi Co., Ltd. accelerates POE

On February 25, Chengzhi Co., Ltd. announced that it plans to acquire 100% equity of Huaqing Chemical through its wholly-owned subsidiary Qingdao Huaqing through equity transfer. After completing the above-mentioned acquisition, the company plans to use the above-mentioned land as the construction land for the company’s investment in the construction of POE projects and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene projects.

Satellite Chemical’s 1000 tons/year POE will be put into production soon

Satellite Chemical stated on the investor interaction platform on January 13 that the company has the advantages of a complete ethylene industry chain, the self-developed POE project is being implemented, and the small-scale test products have been sent to downstream customers for testing. At present, α-olefin, the core raw material of POE, has built a 1,000-ton/year plant. On March 30, Satellite Chemical announced that the project has been successfully started.

On December 14, 2022, the environmental impact assessment of the pilot project was announced, with a planned total investment of 30 million yuan and a construction period of 10 months. The project relies on the company’s existing ethylene raw materials, and mainly builds 700 tons/year Annual 1-hexene and 180 tons/year mixed heavy olefins. It is learned that this project plans to use the catalyst and production technology independently developed by Satellite Chemical Research Institute, which uses advanced continuous solution polymerization method α-olefin production technology. Under the catalysis of organometallic catalysts, ethylene oligomerization occurs to produce α-olefins.

Baofeng’s 200,000 tons/year 1-butene project has entered the construction period

Recently, an investor asked a question on the investor interaction platform: Does your company have any POE film-related products and technology patents? Such as high carbon alpha olefin product technology. Baofeng Energy stated on the investor interaction platform that the company’s Inner Mongolia project has the technology to produce high-carbon α-olefin products.

The project mainly constructs 3×2.2 million tons/year methanol plant (including air separation of 7×110000Nm³/h oxygen,
3×562,000 Nm³/h effective gas (CO+H2) gasification, transformation, heat recovery and low-temperature methanol washing, 3×65,000 tons/year sulfur recovery), 3×1 million tons/year methanol to olefins unit ( Olefin separation), 3×500,000 tons/year polypropylene unit, 3×550,000 tons/year polyethylene unit, 200,000 tons/year C4-1-butene unit, 200,000 tons/year steam cracking unit. In addition to the production of polypropylene and polyethylene, by-products such as sulfur, heavy carbon tetrachloride, C5+, ethylene tar, and MTBE are also produced.
