In order to meet the increasing market demand, Wacker Chemie Group plans to expand the silicone sealant production capacity and the rubber cartridge filling capacity of the Nünchritz production site. This move will also provide higher supply capacity for customers who do not have their own equipment and entrust WACKER to produce and fill silicone sealants for direct sales. The new production line plans to invest about 20 million euros and start commissioning in the autumn of 2024. Construction is expected to start within this year, subject to obtaining all necessary administrative approvals. The expansion will create more than ten new jobs at the production site in Nünchritz.

Architectural silicone is very popular. It can be used to seal doors, windows, kitchen and bathroom, and walls. It is fast in construction, reliable in effect and durable in use. It not only protects important building components from splashing water, dirt and moisture, but in the face of rising energy prices and increasing building energy efficiency requirements, silicone sealants can also create a comfortable living environment and reduce heat loss, which can be described as Serves multiple purposes.

The market for alkoxy silicones has grown particularly rapidly in recent years. This type of sealant is used in indoor spaces without any concerns. Alkoxy silicones are one-component silicone sealants that are neutrally crosslinked and release ethanol when crosslinked. This sealant can also be used on sensitive building materials such as natural stone or metal. Alkoxy silicones are versatile, both indoors and outdoors. The market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

“WACKER is one of the important producers of silicone sealants with a high level of user convenience. This expansion of our production capacity in Nünchritz will help us open up new markets and strengthen our sealant production in Europe pivotal position.” WACKER Board Member Auguste Williams
Willems) said so. He noted that the investment also demonstrates WACKER’s commitment to supporting the development of highly sustainable and innovative applications and solutions with its products. “We have set the goal to intensify the development of products that contribute to energy-efficient, climate-friendly and sustainable buildings. Our alkoxy silicones play an important role here,” he said.

The project plans to build a fully continuous silicone sealant mixing production line at the production base in Nünchritz, and expand the filling capacity of rubber cartridges. The new production line will be located next to the existing equipment. Jutta, General Manager of Nünchritz
Dr. Matreux emphasizes: “We will fully integrate these plants into the production and make optimum use of the filling capacity and the existing logistics capacity here.”

The expansion will significantly increase WACKER’s production capacity and filling capacity for silicone sealants in Nünchritz. Depending on the product, the capacity of the new filling line can reach up to 30 million hoses per year. If all administrative approvals can be obtained in the near future, the new equipment is expected to be put into operation next fall. The expansion will create more than ten new jobs at the Nünchritz production base, and will give priority to hiring local professional and technical personnel.

About silicone sealants

RTV silicone sealants offer excellent performance and are versatile for sealing, bonding and coating tasks. Architectural silicones meet the sealing needs of sanitary facilities, doors and windows, wall joints, natural stone joints and aquarium production. Silicone sealants, which consist of polydimethylsiloxane, crosslinkers, fillers and auxiliaries, begin to crosslink immediately after application and release by-products. Depending on the crosslinker used, silicone sealants upon curing release small amounts of amines or acetic acid, or, in the case of neutral compounds, alcohols or oximes. Alkoxy silicones are neutrally cross-linked sealants that release ethanol when cured.

Since 2020, WACKER also offers ELASTOSIL®
eco is a brand that provides bio-methanol-based silicone sealants. The difference between this type of sealant and traditional sealant is only in the source of raw materials, and there is no difference in the characteristics of the product itself. ELASTOSIL®
The eco sealant is certified to the REDcert2 standard, ensuring traceability of renewable raw material sources used throughout the production process – from key precursor production to the mixed ready-to-use silicone sealant. The fossil raw materials required for production are replaced by certified sustainable biomass, making ELASTOSIL®
eco becomes the first generation of sealant products that do not require petrochemical raw materials.

RTV silicone sealants perform a variety of tasks including sealing, bonding and coating. Due to the high demand, WACKER is expanding the capacity for alkoxylated silicone sealants at the Nünchritz site.
