Biopharmaceuticals are one of the fastest growing areas of the pharmaceutical industry. Biological agents isolated from microorganisms or animal or plant cells are often used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes and many other diseases. Biologics are administered to the human body by injection, often requiring patients to make painstaking trips to specialized medical facilities for help or painful self-injections.
To address the above difficulties, Enable Injections has developed a disposable drug delivery device for use in the human body that allows patients to comfortably self-administer large volume and/or high viscosity therapeutic agents. The Enable device components are injection molded from polycarbonate from Covestro LLC.
The delivery device above features a purple housing made of Makroon® Rx1805 polycarbonate. The white Bayblend M850 XF PC + ABS blend plays an important role in the delivery system, allowing the patient to easily transfer the biologic drug from its original container to the Enable delivery device.
said Brian Faul, Midwest Business Development Manager, Polycarbonates Division, Covestro LLC: “From selecting the right polycarbonate material, to supporting in-house testing and production, Covestro has supported Enable Injections every step of the way. Support.”
Makrolon Rx1805 polycarbonate is a medical-grade resin commonly used in the production of transparent parts for medical devices, providing the following benefits for device housings, including:
-Sterilizable by high energy radiation
-Biocompatibility, meet the requirements of ISO 10993-1 test
-High viscosity
-High lipid resistance
Bayblend® M850 XF PC + ABS blend provides the following advantages for transmission systems, including:
-Biocompatibility, meet the requirements of ISO 10993-1 test
-Good liquidity
-Heat resistance up to 131°C (Vicat B/120)
-High dimensional accuracy, high stability and high toughness
“Biopharmaceuticals are very sensitive and choosing the right materials for delivery systems is critical to patient safety,” said Lauren Zetts, North American Market Manager, Medical and Consumer Business, Polycarbonates Division, Covestro LLC. With a consistent focus on providing OEMs in the medical industry with the materials they need to bring their products to market, we are naturally delighted that the company has been selected for this application, which also has a significant positive impact on the lives of patients. “
At the MD&M West Conference & Expo in Anaheim, CA, February 6-8, attendees can learn more about the company’s expertise in medical applications and materials by visiting Covestro’s booth (#2221) information about the field.
