In recent years, the development of new energy is in full swing and has driven the development of the lithium battery industry. It is understood that in 2017, China’s lithium-ion battery shipments reached 74.8Gwh, accounting for 52.1% of global shipments. It is estimated that by 2020, China’s lithium-ion battery shipments will reach 173.2Gwh. As a solvent commonly used in the production process of lithium batteries, the NMP market has also shown vigorous vitality.
NMP is used as a solvent and extractant in a wide range of fields. It can be used in traditional fields such as agricultural chemicals, dyes, inks, and coatings. Now it is mainly used in new energy power batteries, energy storage batteries, consumer electronics, polymer materials, Emerging fields such as semiconductor and display panel cleaning. In recent years, in line with the national new energy industry policy, NMP has been increasingly used in conductive agents slurries and lithium-ion batteries. The application proportion of these two fields accounts for about 75% of the NMP application field. NMP has a certain influence on the coating quality and effect of the lithium battery production section and the improvement of the energy density of lithium batteries. In the batching stage, as a PVDF solvent, maintain a stable slurry within a certain viscosity range; in the coating stage, as a slurry has very good wettability and fluidity; it evaporates from the wet film at a stable speed during the coating and baking stage, A porous microelectrode structure with uniform pore size and distribution is formed.
(Note: The production and sales data of new energy vehicles in 2018 are estimated data)
According to the data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the compound annual growth rate of production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 90% from 2014 to 2018. From January to August 2018, the cumulative production and sales of new energy vehicles were 607,000 and 601,000 respectively. In the next few years, the production and sales of new energy vehicles will continue to increase significantly.
At present, my country’s NMP production capacity is only around 280,000 tons per year, and there are as many as 20 manufacturers, with factories with a production capacity of less than 20,000 tons accounting for the majority. According to Tiantian Chemical Network, the growth rate of new NMP production capacity in 2018 is expected to reach 130%.
According to the forecast of the China Automobile Association, the annual sales of new energy vehicles in 2018 will exceed 1 million. According to the calculation of 30% pure electric vehicles (about 0.6 tons of NMP per car lithium battery), the annual demand for NMP in 2018 is expected to exceed 180,000 tons.
