European spot styrene prices hit their highest level since June 1 as the market's backwardation steepened, according to S&P Global Platts.

On Wednesday, the 5-30 day forward spot price of styrene was assessed at $1,388 FOB ARA per ton, up $5.50 per ton on the day, reaching its highest level since early June.

The August-September spot premium was calculated at $22/mt on Wednesday, and was expected to remain flat on Friday.

Production problems at the propylene oxide styrene monomer unit jointly owned by LyondellBasell and Covestro in the Netherlands are responsible for the price surge and steepening of backwardation.

On August 1, Covestro said that there was a problem with its production. The company also confirmed that the supply of styrene from its Dutch plant was affected by force majeure.

This price increase is contrary to expectations, as the market expects that prices will remain in balance with long-term fundamentals.

In mid-to-late July, the delivery of products imported from the United States was delayed. However, it is expected that there will be sufficient imports in August, and the price increase will be limited.

Covestro said it was "difficult to predict" how long the plant shutdown would last.
