From November 27th to 29th, 2018, companies from the document and identity industry will meet again in Cannes, South of France. They will present their latest developments at the TRUSTECH (French Smart Card Exhibition) trade show. Covestro has more than 30 years of experience in providing material solutions for ID document manufacturers.

At booth A 043 in the Riviera Hall, the company will demonstrate an integrated concept passport featuring innovative technology based on specialty films. The company has improved security card performance, especially with anti-counterfeiting features in its new products. Key features of the new passport include a concept technology for a new transparent window and a new generation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

Other security features: transparent windows

At TRUSTECH, Covestro will present a concept technology for a new type of transparent window. This window provides an additional security feature against counterfeiting. During the manufacture of ID documents, it must be ensured that the surface of the document is even and free of inhomogeneities. Covestro has developed a very thin film with extremely high opacity, which is especially suitable for seamless integration in transparent window applications.

The innovative film solution enables a new production method that does not require the use of additional materials to fill perforated windows in polycarbonate cards or passport data pages. During the lamination process, the transparent layers are merged and the pores are filled without causing an uneven surface on the document. This innovative structure offers greater scope for the transparency layer and the integration of other safety functions. It is also possible to implement complex window geometries. The thinner opaque film also simplifies the lamination process and significantly reduces job time and reduces the visibility of the integrated antenna and chip.

During conventional manufacturing, die-cut windows are filled with Makrofol® ID clear polycarbonate film. It is perforated from small strips of film to reduce material waste and can be processed on automated document production lines.

Simplify the production process

Cengiz Yesildag, Global Head of Identity and Security Documents at Covestro, explains: “We are proud to offer our customers solutions that simplify the production process. Makrofol ID white high opacity film will make it easier to construct transparent windows in security documents. The advantages are combined with a short lamination time, resulting in a win-win situation with the customer.”

Covestro’s opaque film won the “Security Document Summit” on October 17, 2018 in China Blue Shield Innovation Award”, this is the fifth consecutive year it has won the award.

Next Generation TPU Hinge Material

Another product being developed by Covestro will affect the interior design of the passport. The data pages are laminated to thin folds, which are then integrated into the passport for security. The production process is extremely efficient and the bonding is also very durable: the passport can be opened and closed as often as necessary without compromising flexibility and without the flaps tearing.

The hinge is made of multi-layer film TPU composite material. At TRUSTECH, Covestro will present a new Platilon® ID film with a further 35% increase in tear resistance compared to the standard product Platilon® ID9122.

More flexible design

Thinner film composites allow for more design flexibility than single-layer films, especially for thinner data pages. As a result, the integration of safety functions is simplified and the thinner layer thickness saves costs.

The multi-layer Platilon® ID combines perfectly with polycarbonate and ensures that the data pages will not peel off without completely destroying the passport.

Covestro has developed Makrofol® ID high-energy laser polycarbonate film specifically for anti-counterfeit security cards. This three-layer composite is extremely sensitive to laser radiation. As a result, its laser engraving requires less energy and saves at least 20 percent time during production compared to conventional laser-sensitive films. At the same time, maximum contrast is achieved even with very thin layers: 50% of the data content of an individual photo is already contained in a thin layer just 10 microns thick.
