Together with partners, Covestro is investigating how to significantly increase the recycling rate of polyurethane plastics. Covestro is a member of the new European research program "PUReSmart", which includes nine companies and academic institutions in six countries. The initiative aims to close the complete loop of the product lifecycle, transforming polyurethane into a truly sustainable material. Soft foam and rigid foam are two materials made of polyurethane, soft foam and hard foam are used in mattresses and upholstered furniture, as well as building insulation and refrigeration equipment.

The PUReSmart program will last for 4 years and belongs to the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program (Grant Agreement No. 814543), which will receive a grant of 6 million euros from the European Union. The Belgian company Recticel, which is coordinating the initiative, aims to recycle 90% of used polyurethane as a raw material for existing or new products (e.g. a combination of the durability of solid plastics and the recyclability of thermoplastics). combined new polymers). Smart sorting methods are essential for efficient chemical recycling.

Get new premium ingredients

During the implementation of the program, Covestro will study the optimal chemical recycling of waste polyurethane materials, as well as the qualitative treatment of the resulting material flows. The aim is to obtain high-quality raw materials for new polyurethane applications. Nikola Schuck, head of PUReSmart at Covestro, said: "Polyurethane is a versatile plastic with a wide range of uses around the world, adding comfort and safety to products. As a thermal insulation material, polyurethane contributes to energy savings, This contributes to sustainable development." He added: "Now is the time to increase the sustainable value of polyurethane materials at the end of their useful life."

In addition to Covestro and Recticel, the companies BT-WolfgangBinder (Austria), WeylChemInnoTec (Germany), EcoinnovazioneSRL (Italy) and Ayming (France) are also participating in the PUReSmart program. PUReSmart stands for a seamless and complete value-added chain in the polyurethane recycling process. Other academic partners include Ghent University (Belgium), KU Leuven (Belgium) and the University of Castilla (Spain).
