On April 11, Governor John Bel Edwards and BASF Senior Vice President Stefan Doerr announced that BASF will advance its second-phase MDI expansion project at the Geismar Chemical Base in Luzhou. BASF expects to double its MDI production from 300,000 tons/year to about 600,000 tons/year through a multi-phase expansion project announced in January 2018.

It is reported that BASF will invest 87 million US dollars to continue to expand its MDI device. For more than 30 years, the unit has been the heart of its Geismar factory. The company has invested $150 million in the expansion of the first phase of the MDI plant. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020. The second phase of the expansion project will preserve the company's existing 1,238 jobs in Geismar. Geismar is the company's largest manufacturing facility in North America. Construction of the project is expected to start in late 2019 and be completed in 2021. The company estimates the project will support 170 construction jobs.

BASF is a leader in the polyurethane industry and operates a global production network of MDI plants in China, South Korea, Belgium and the United States.

Doerr, head of BASF's monomer business unit in North America, said: "With the continuous development of the US market, BASF needs to make this investment to support the growth of our existing customer base.
