On February 4, PPG announced a partnership with Dow and its Sustainable Future Program to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies. The collaboration focuses on joint research and development of steel anti-corrosion coating products aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through improved energy efficiency while helping to reduce the high maintenance costs of steel infrastructure.

Based on Dow's next-generation polysiloxane technology, PPG's two-layer PPG PSX coating has a 25-year performance record and requires fewer coats to achieve the same level of protection as traditional three-layer systems . This results in less energy-intensive production and use, with corresponding reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the Sustainable Futures Initiative's goal of advancing state-of-the-art technology with tangible sustainability benefits for society.

Compared with alternative systems, PPG PSX coatings provide better long-term adhesion and toughness under even the harshest exposure conditions, as well as better corrosion, weather and chemical resistance. While other coating technologies typically require three coats - a primer, an intermediate coat and a top coat, PPG PSX coatings are simple two-coat systems with a zinc primer and a polysiloxane top coat. Compared to traditional topcoat technologies, polysiloxanes require less recoating over time, resulting in lower maintenance costs for owners and associated environmental impact.

The PPG PSX product portfolio includes PPG PSX 700 two-component coating, PPG PSX one-component acrylic silicone and PPG PSX 805 epoxy silicone with a satin finish. These proprietary products use Dow polysiloxane resin technology.
