Recently, BASF, Quantafuel and REMONDIS signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly evaluate chemical recycling cooperation business, including joint investment in the construction of a plastic waste pyrolysis plant. According to the memorandum, Remandis, as the world's leading waste and water resources management company, will provide suitable plastic waste to the plant; BASF will use the pyrolysis oil produced by the plant as an integrated base Raw materials for the production of raw materials, to further promote the "ChemCycling" project (ChemCycling^TM); Quantafuel will provide technical support and be responsible for the operation of the pyrolysis unit. Quantafuel, as an expert in pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste and purification of pyrolysis oil, jointly develops and holds waste pyrolysis and pyrolysis oil purification technology with BASF. The three parties will also jointly evaluate the siting of the pyrolysis unit.

Every year, nearly 20 million tons of plastic waste is generated in Europe that cannot be recycled. As a complementary solution to mechanical recycling, chemical recycling will help bring more plastic waste into the material cycle. Otherwise, these wastes will be incinerated. Pyrolysis can be used to treat plastic waste streams that cannot be recycled mechanically for technical or economic reasons.

The three parties to the agreement will jointly determine which plastic waste provided by Remandis can be chemically recycled, so as to maximize the circular economy of plastics.

Legislation at EU and national level will establish a framework for chemical recycling to determine the extent to which it can contribute to a circular economy for plastics, including counting products based on chemically recycled raw materials into recycling content target.

BASF's integrated site will use pyrolysis oil extracted from plastic waste for production, saving an equivalent amount of fossil resources. Since pyrolysis oils are used at the very beginning of the chemical value chain, the end products sold will have exactly the same properties as those produced from fossil raw materials. The share of recycled material used in the final product will be allocated according to a third-party certified mass balance method, which will also allow BASF to offer its customers certified products marked with CcycledTM.
