Interview with Su Bingli, Business Director of Huntsman Polyurethane Division China
the
A few days ago, Huntsman Polyurethane Division, the world’s leading MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) manufacturer, held a “Innovation, Development with the Market – Polyurethane Pipeline Insulation Technology Seminar” in Tianjin. At the meeting, senior technical experts in the industry, pipeline manufacturers, and enterprise representatives focused on “Introduction to the New National Standard for Pipeline Insulation”, “Theme Report on Quality Control of Prefabricated Insulated Pipelines”, “National Regional Energy and Pipeline Insulation Engineering”, “European Insulated Pipelines” Market Technology”, “Introduction to Huntsman Polyurethane Foam System” and other themed reports to share and discuss.
During the meeting, Su Bingli, Business Director of Huntsman Polyurethanes China, and Cao Peifang, Business Manager of Huntsman Polyurethanes China, accepted exclusive interviews from media reporters on Huntsman’s customer concerns in technology research and development, marketing, corporate development, and innovative ideas.

It is understood that the Huntsman Polyurethane Division focuses on technology research and development. In 2012, more than 25% of the 2,500 employees of the Polyurethane Division worldwide were R&D technicians, mainly producing MDI and MDI-related upstream and downstream products. In September this year, the company’s newly expanded Asia-Pacific R&D Center in Shanghai, China, was officially put into operation to support the demand for world-class innovative technologies in the Asia-Pacific market.
When talking about the theme of the meeting “Forward-looking Innovation and Technology”, Su Bingli introduced that the core product in the application field of polyurethane rigid foam products is MDI, and the future development potential will be in the building insulation industry. In the field of pipeline insulation applications, Huntsman products account for more than 40% of the market. After subdivision, it will involve pipelines, plates, spraying, etc. When it comes to core competitiveness, “Because of the particularity of the industry, there are 4-5 competitors for polyurethane MDI products, but the technical research and development capabilities of products and the team’s after-sales service are the keys to success.” Su Bingli said. It is understood that Huntsman’s annual investment in product research and development accounts for 3%-4% of its total revenue. Currently, it has an international network of 14 first-class technology research and development and formulation centers around the world.
Huntsman’s continuous investment in the Chinese market can be traced back to entering the Chinese market in 1992 and building the first MDI factory. As a world-class MDI production base and R&D center, Su Bingli told reporters that the application space of MDI in the future is directly related to the demand for production capacity. At present, the development speed and space of the relatively large domestic appliance industry and the automobile industry can be said to have entered a bottleneck, but there are some new industries that have not yet been touched, which will also be the basis for future industry expansion. “For example, in the field of building insulation, this is a virgin land that has not been really explored.” Unlike the refrigerator industry, the construction industry will have 4-5 kinds of materials to choose from in the future, and the advanced concept of green environmental protection, energy saving and emission reduction of polyurethane materials It will be vigorously supported and promoted by the industry. “For example, the Bird’s Nest in Beijing and the most beautiful T3 terminal in Shenzhen all use Huntsman polyurethane insulation materials, and another area is CWP composite panels. Now with the scarcity of forest resources, there are no mature materials in many application areas. Therefore, we make composite panels. This market field has not yet been developed, and there will be a lot of room for replacement in the future.” Cao Peifang added. When the reporter mentioned the status quo of mixed fish and dragons in the downstream of the building insulation industry and uneven product quality, Su Bingli also called on the national quality supervision department not only to improve the quality standards of inspection, but also to strengthen law enforcement to ensure the long-term, healthy and sustainable development of the industry and avoid potential risks. Waste of resources.
As an important strategic market for the company’s development, the importance of the Chinese market is self-evident. Su Bingli took the company’s newly launched Chinese official website as an example, pointing out the great potential of the Chinese market and e-commerce platform. “In terms of directionality, Chinese websites are more suitable for dissemination and recommendation to the market. Inspired by Singles’ Day, we realized that there is a need for an e-commerce platform, not just a simple promotion platform, but also a transaction and technology platform in the future service platform.” Su Bingli said firmly, “Huntsman is optimistic about the development of the Chinese market.” This year Huntsman signed some cooperation agreements with Sinopec Jinling Branch, established a joint venture branch in Nanjing, and also acquired Indian Laffans Petrochemical companies want to expand the Indian chemical market, and various acquisitions show that Huntsman has full confidence in the Asian market. When the reporter asked, apart from the Chinese and Indian markets, which Asian country Huntsman is more optimistic about in the future business development, Su Bingli told us: “In addition to the Chinese market, the Indonesian market is our optimistic market in the future. Indonesia is rich in resources and the population size is The third most populous country after China and India, if Indonesia can stabilize the currency exchange rate regime, it will haveConducive to the new foreign investment into the domestic development. ”

Regarding future MDI production capacity, Su Bingli believes that in terms of MDI expansion, there should be no problem of overcapacity in the medium and long term, because there are still many application spaces that have not been opened. “Materials made of MDI are going to replace traditional materials. This process has just started, and there is still a lot of room for future development. In this sense, our MDI series products are more like new materials.” And this kind of Substitution will show its value more with the further improvement of environmental protection requirements. In Su Bingli’s view, the control of indoor air quality and the VOC in the automotive field, that is, the air quality inside the car, both of which are in direct contact with the human body, will become an important driving force for advancing the research and development of material industry technology.
2013 has entered the end of the year, what is Huntsman’s performance in polyurethane in 2013? Su Bingli told reporters: “Our business growth this year is still good. The most important strategy is that we cooperate with the changes in the domestic macro economy. In some export-oriented industries such as refrigerators and shoes, the growth rate is not as fast as before. Fast; but in the field of infrastructure investment or energy conservation and thermal insulation, not only has there been no deceleration, but there has been more accelerated growth. Therefore, the business growth of the entire industry has surpassed that of last year, which is a satisfactory double-digit positive growth. When talking about the future development, Su Bingli is even more confident: “I believe this growth trend can be maintained in China in the next three to five years. Domestic double-digit growth exceeds the global average growth rate of 6%-7%. The market will not be lower than double digits under any circumstances, but there are some structural adjustments. This strategy is not a question of growth, but a question of how to grow.”
