A few days ago, during the Guangzhou PU China 2015 exhibition, Dow Chemical held a media meeting, Mr. Mr. Gu Wei, Asia Pacific Marketing Director of Dow Polyurethane Business Unit, introduced the development of Dow Polyurethane Business Unit in Asia Pacific and China to the media.

(Mr. Sundry, Commercial Director, Asia Pacific, Dow Polyurethane Business Department)

Established in 1897, Dow Chemical has a history of more than 110 years. As one of the top chemical companies in the world, Dow Chemical has more than 200 factories in 35 countries and regions around the world. Among them, the Greater China region has become Dow’s second largest international market in the world. The Shanghai Dow Center with 2,000 employees is the headquarters of the Dow Greater China region and the Asia-Pacific region.

The importance of the Asia-Pacific region to the world economy is self-evident. Therefore, the Asia-Pacific region is also an indispensable part of Dow’s polyurethane business. Mr. Sundry said that Dow is very optimistic about the increase in demand for polyurethane business in the Asia-Pacific region. “It is estimated that by 2030, 60% of the world’s middle class will live in the Asia-Pacific region, so we can imagine that their pursuit of quality of life will drive The increase in demand for polyurethane, including the demand for comfort, the need to reduce energy consumption, and the demand for some special industrial products that are closely related to life, these demands will continue to increase.”

Last year, Dow Chemical’s sales were US$58 billion, of which the sales of the global polyurethane business was US$6 billion, accounting for more than 10% of all businesses. About 20%. “But we still have huge room for growth, especially after the Sadara project is put into operation, our sales volume will increase.” Sundry said. It is reported that Sadara, a joint venture between Dow and Saudi Aramco, will be officially put into operation next year. This is Dow’s largest single chemical integration project in the world, including 28 world-class factories, with a total investment of 20 billion US dollars. At that time, more than half of the products will be supplied to the Asia-Pacific region. Sundry said: “This is an effective supplement to Dow’s polyurethane business network in the Asia-Pacific region, making our supply more stable and our product series more abundant.” According to reports, the Sadara project will have MDI and TDI products are put into production, among which, the application of MDI is mainly rigid foam, TDI is sponge. In addition, Dow has auxiliary facilities elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region that will use Sadara’s raw material polyethers and isocyanates to produce prepolymers for industrial applications.

Since there is a production plan, Dow will inevitably face the problem of overcapacity of polyurethane raw materials in the Asia-Pacific region. In this regard, Dow pays more attention to whether the investment cost of the equipment is competitive. Sundry pointed out: “Most of our installations are integrated installations, which have a certain cost competitive advantage. Over time, some small, non-integrated installations, those that are not cost-competitive Competitors will be slowly eliminated from the market.”

In addition to the cost advantage of integrated devices, another foothold of Dow is the depth and breadth of products. How to make the industrial chain deeper and how to expand the breadth in different application fields is also Dow’s goal Competitive Advantage. In this regard, Mr. Gu Wei gave an example. The demand for refrigerators in the Chinese market is actually not strong this year, but the innovative product LBA foam developed by Dow and its partner Honeywell has received good feedback from the market. A brand-new HFO foaming system was introduced to the market in cooperation with Honeywell, so we also got a lot of orders.”

In Dow’s view, integrated large-scale factories, products with breadth and depth, and excellent technical services are the three major elements that reflect the company’s innovation ability, and only innovation can achieve the sustainable development of polyurethane .
