Stahl, a leading supplier of coatings technology, has announced the successful recertification of its two plants in Germany and the Netherlands to the ISCC PLUS standard. The recertification of the two plants by the certification body TÜV NORD means that Stahl can continue to expand the use of renewable raw materials in its polyurethane portfolio and beyond. This will enable the company to offer customers more products that contain renewable raw materials. The development marks a key step for Stahl in supply chain transparency. The company’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the value chain.
Stahl’s ISCC PLUS-certified products, manufactured at its Waalwijk, Netherlands and Leinfelden, Germany plants, include polyurethane coatings for flexible materials such as textiles, films and paper. These polyurethanes are made from 20% to 70% renewable biomass and recycled content. These products offer the same performance as traditional fossil-based alternatives.
Renewable content is measured and verified using a mass balance method. It is a calculation-based method that traces the flow of materials through complex supply chains. Products with mass balance certification, such as ISCC PLUS compliant products, often contain a mix of renewable and non-renewable raw materials. The principle of mass balance ensures that the proportion of renewable raw materials remains consistent from purchase to finished product.
Michael Costello, ESG Group Director at Stahl, said: “Mass balance certification verifies that Stahl’s factories adhere to the highest standards of traceability, which is required for the production of high-performance products containing both fossil and renewable raw materials. Certification also requires reporting Establishing a transparent chain of custody for renewable raw materials used by companies. This is critical to reducing potential upstream supply chain risks, making ISCC PLUS certification an important tool for promoting greater supply chain transparency across the industry.”
Lidia Martínez, ESG Supply Chain Transparency Manager at Stahl, said: “We are delighted to offer our customers more mass balance certified products produced using ISCC PLUS certified raw materials. Through recertification, we can continuously expand the use of bio-based, bio-circular and circular raw materials Range of mass balance certified polyurethanes produced. ISCC PLUS recertification is a guarantee of the quality and transparency of Stahl’s mass balance bookkeeping. In line with ISCC PLUS, providing proof of traceability is one of the ways we support the responsible sourcing of renewable raw materials one.
