Covestro’s polyurethane resins receive TÜV Rheinland certification for commercial materials in the solar industry

A few days ago, Covestro Baydot® polyurethane resin obtained the commercial material certification for the solar energy industry from TüV Rheinland (hereinafter referred to as “TüV Rheinland”), an international independent third-party testing, inspection and certification organization. The frame is an important part of the solar photovoltaic module. It can fix and seal the solar cell module and the back sheet, enhance the strength of the module, and facilitate transportation and installation. Its performance will also have a direct impact on the service life of the battery module. Photovoltaic frames are usually made of energy-intensive aluminum alloys. The polyurethane composite frame made of Baiduo® polyurethane resin developed by Covestro is resistant to chemical corrosion and has comprehensive cost competitiveness, providing photovoltaic module manufacturers with a new material choice. The commercial material certification issued by TüV Rheinland is an important certification mark in the solar industry. The test items include thermal life, physical properties and electrical performance tests.

Based on the breakthrough Baiduo® polyurethane resin and innovative composite material pultrusion production process, the polyurethane composite material frame has excellent corrosion resistance, especially suitable for coastal and offshore power stations with high humidity and high salt spray. In addition, as a non-metallic material, it has excellent insulating properties and can avoid grounding, while helping to reduce the potential potential induced degradation (PID) effect and improve the power generation efficiency of the panel.

In 2016, Covestro and its partners successfully developed a polyurethane composite photovoltaic frame. The first batch of solar panels using this frame were installed on the roof of Covestro’s Asia Pacific Innovation Center in Shanghai and have been operating well for many years. Starting in 2022, the frames will be exported to Germany for distributed photovoltaic applications.
