Multinational chemical giant Wacker Chemical Co., Ltd. announced on the 26th that it will expand its special silicone production capacity in China. This globally operating chemical group held a groundbreaking ceremony at its Zhangjiagang production base in Jiangsu Province on the same day, kicking off the construction of multiple new production lines for functional silicone oils, silicone emulsions and silicone elastomer gels. The expansion project plans to invest approximately 150 million euros and has obtained relevant permits from the local government. The new equipment is planned to be put into operation in the second half of 2025.
Hu Wentao, President of WACKER China, said: “This expansion project is the largest single investment we have made since the Zhangjiagang production base was officially put into operation in 2010. Chinese customers’ demand for innovative specialty silicone products is growing. Building a new Production equipment and strengthening local R&D capabilities will not only strengthen WACKER’s business in China, but also demonstrate our determination to provide better services to customers in China and the Asia-Pacific region in the future.”
Dr. Christian Kirsten, who is responsible for the group’s global silicone business on WACKER’s board of directors, also emphasized the continued growth in market demand for high-quality specialty silicones.
“Silicon oils, silicone emulsions and silicone elastomer gels are now used in many fields, and we expect this trend to continue unabated.” Kosten said that further increasing the share of specialty silicone products in WACKER’s product portfolio is The Group’s strategy, and expanding production capacity in Zhangjiagang is another step taken by WACKER to implement this strategy.
WACKER’s silicone emulsions and silicone elastomer gels are commonly used in textiles, cosmetics and personal care products, such as moisturizers, shampoos, fabric softeners, etc. They prevent makeup from staining clothes, reduce the negative impact of sunscreen protection from water exposure, and allow moisturizers and night creams to give skin an extremely comfortable silky feel. Functional silicone oil is also an important basic material for industrial applications such as impregnating agents and release agents. Silicone oil can also be used as an additive in the fields of construction, coatings and papermaking.
The Zhangjiagang production base is one of the largest comprehensive production bases of the WACKER Group.
