2-Amino-2-(4-fluorophenyl)acetic acid-(S)-methyl ester can be used as a pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis intermediate. If 2-amino-2-(4-fluorophenyl)acetic acid-(S)-methyl ester is inhaled, move the patient to fresh air; if skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse the skin and seek medical attention if you feel any discomfort. If contact occurs with eyes, separate the eyelids, rinse with running water or saline, and seek medical attention immediately. Thionyl chloride (0.475 mL, 6.50 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of (S)-4-fluorophenylglycine (1.00 g, 5.91 mmol) in MeOH (25.0 mL), and the mixture was stirred under reflux for 2 Hour. The reaction mixture was then concentrated to give a brown oil. The residue was dissolved in EtOAc and the solution was partitioned between EtOAc and saturated aqueous NaHCO3. The aqueous phase was separated and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give 2-amino-2-(4-fluorophenyl)acetic acid-(S)-methyl ester (1.1 g, 6.0 mmol, 100 % yield), as brown oil.
