On October 9, Avient, a leading provider of professional and sustainable materials solutions and services
Corporation has announced the launch of a range of PTFE-free, halogen-free flame retardants designed specifically for polycarbonate for use in electrical and electronic (E&E) products. This highly anticipated product will make its debut at the upcoming Fakuma International Plastics Processing Exhibition 2023.

The inherent properties of polycarbonate make it the polymer of choice for applications requiring clarity, impact strength and dimensional stability. The resin itself is heat-resistant, but for some demanding applications, flame retardants need to be added to improve its flame retardancy. Traditionally, these flame retardants often contain polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE), which is a per- and polyfluorinated substance (PFAS)
Part of PFAS, a group of chemicals widely used to repel heat, oil, stains and water. However, PFAS can persist in water and soil because many PFAS break down very slowly over time, which raises environmental concerns. As a result, many countries have restricted PFAS, and pressure is growing to ban all PFAS. This has prompted manufacturers of electronic and electrical products to look for non-PFAS materials.

Avient’s new Cesa™ polycarbonate flame retardant formulation does not contain PTFE, which is commonly used as an anti-drip agent in traditional flame retardant polycarbonates. They are also halogen-free and comply with IEC
61249-2-21 standard. These flame retardants are suitable for various polycarbonate grades including recycled content, according to IEC
60695-2-12 test, which can help achieve GWFI temperatures up to 960°C. Avient offers these flame retardants in concentrate form, allowing manufacturers to combine them with color and other additives to meet performance requirements. This is particularly beneficial for producers looking for greater flexibility in managing plastic material inventories, allowing them to stock large quantities of virgin or recycled resin while ordering flame retardant concentrates as needed for individual projects.
