Tetradecanol, alias Myristyl alcohol is a colorless liquid above 38°C and a colorless crystal below 38°C. Easily soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene and chloroform, but insoluble in water. Has a pungent odor.
Production method:
1. High-pressure hydrogenation method: coconut oil in copper Continuous hydrogenation in a chromium catalyst produces a C8-C18 mixed alcohol. The glycerin in the oil is hydrogenolyzed into isopropyl alcohol and water. After the mixed fatty alcohols are frequently pressure evaporated to remove the water and isopropyl alcohol, C8-C10 alcohols, C12-C14 alcohols and C16-C18 alcohols are distilled under reduced pressure.
2. Esterification and hydrogenation method: coconut oil undergoes transesterification reaction with methanol in the presence of sulfuric acid to generate methyl laurate and glycerol, which are obtained through catalytic hydrogenation and distillation.
Uses:
1. Tetradecyl alcohol is a modifier in special fragrances of daily chemicals. In addition to being used to add wax fragrance, it is also an emulsifier, surfactant and thickener, so this compound is actually a raw material related to the fragrance industry and daily chemical industry.
2. The main raw material used to produce sodium tetradecyl polyoxyethylene ether succinate monoester sulfonate and sodium tetradecyl polyoxypropylene ether succinate monoester sulfonate.
3. Used in the manufacture of tetradecylmercaptan and detergents.
4. Can be used as raw material for organic synthesis and surfactants.
5. It can also be used as a cream softener.
