July 6, 2023 – Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), a global diversified chemical company, has announced the launch of a new NORYL™ resin technology based on post-consumer recycled material (PCR). The product formula of this technology contains 25%
The above PCR components are designed to provide customers with more options for sustainable solutions. The technology has been proven in practice and several grades are on the market, including NORYL with 30% PCR content
NH5120RC3 resin. NORYL NH5120RC3 resin has a 10% lower global warming potential (GWP) than existing fossil-based counterparts.
This new PCR-based technology can be integrated into more than 200 existing NORYL resin grades, and can also be added to multiple new grades according to specific customer needs. Such grades include glass fiber reinforced grades and non-reinforced non-flame retardant grades. In addition, SABIC is also able to provide resin customization services to meet specific application requirements and a full range of technical support services. Novel PCR-based technologies help improve product cycleability while maintaining robust physical properties required in demanding applications. This innovative sustainable solution is the first
(PPE)-based material technology with high post-consumer recycled content.
“Our new PCR-based NORYL resin technology is another milestone in SABIC’s long-term growth strategy to meet customers’ sustainability requirements and increase product recycling.”
Zhao Fanli, director of LNP and NORYL business management of SABIC’s special materials department, said. “Increasing PCR in products
Ingredient content is one of the ways we improve the sustainability of our products. In addition, we were the first in the industry to use a chemical upcycling process for single-use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, and we are working to expand the use of bio-based materials in our products. as SABIC
The extraordinary results achieved by the Specialty Materials Division in terms of sustainable development, these initiatives also fully demonstrate the fact that we are not only focused on the future, but also committed to focusing on the present with ground-breaking products. ”
New challenges in production process – engineering thermoplastics based on PCR
“Developing PPE materials with a high proportion of recycled materials is not an easy task. This means we have to solve a series of technical challenges.” said Luc Govaerts, Technical Director of SABIC Special Materials Division.
“With professional products and superb technology, our scientific research experts have developed a brand new product portfolio based on PCR. Today, we have successfully launched the first flame-retardant NORYL with stable performance
Material. Even when used in harsh outdoor environments, the material has excellent hydrolytic stability, dimensional stability and excellent retention of mechanical properties.
Depending on application requirements, customers can replace existing fossil-based NORYL grades with our novel PCR-based technology, achieving desired performance while reducing their carbon footprint. ”
New NORYL NH5120RC3 resin offers chlorine-free, bromine-free flame retardancy for improved sustainability. The material is suitable for electrical applications such as heating/ventilating/air conditioning (HVAC)
Enclosures and photovoltaic/solar junction boxes, etc. It has a UL94 flammability rating of V1 in a sample test with a thickness of 1.5mm. In addition, this resin offers a good balance of flow, thermal properties and creep resistance.
NORYL NH5120RC3 resin is already available worldwide.
Bio-based alternatives are coming soon
To further broaden its portfolio of sustainable materials, SABIC is developing a bio-based PPE technology that can be formulated with any NORYL resin grade. Based on ISCC PLUS
Certified raw material, this bio-based technology will allow customers to tailor NORYL, NORYL GTX, NORYL PPX and Flex NORYL with nearly 100% renewable content
And other resin grades.
