● Expanded portfolio of polyols and oxidation products
● Product categories with lower carbon footprint
● Extended scope of Scopeblue sustainability label
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has taken an important step in the sustainability development of its polyol and oxygenated products (POP) portfolio: Advanced Industrial Intermediates (AII)
The business unit now offers more sustainable solutions for approximately 80% of its POP portfolio. Seven out of nine products including trimethylolpropane (TMP), adipic acid (AA), 1,6-hexanediol (HDO) and phthalic anhydride (PSA) have successfully passed LANXESS internal Scopeblue certification and the rest will follow soon.
Stephan, Head of LANXESS POP Business Line
“We will be one of the first producers to offer our customers both traditional products and products with an improved carbon footprint,” said Dr. Deutsch. For the chemical industry, sustainability itself is much more than that. About 50% of our Customers have already set themselves climate targets for the next few years, similar to LANXESS. We are therefore convinced that Scopeblue will represent an important opportunity for us in the market.”
The Scopeblue brand label identifies products with more than 50% sustainable raw material content, or offers a carbon footprint that is less than half that of conventional counterparts. To demonstrate the use of sustainable raw materials throughout the value chain, the LANXESS production facility in Krefeld-Uerdingen has been certified by TÜV
Nord certified, meeting the internationally recognized ISCC PLUS sustainability standard.

New sustainable TMP
Scopeblue contains approximately 54% n-butyraldehyde produced from biogas and has the same properties as conventional products. Maria, Global Market Manager TCM (Trimethylolpropane, Calcium Formate and Maleic Anhydride) LANXESS
Dr. Guixà reports: “We have produced the first batch of TMP for one of our largest customers
Scopeblue. We are currently in talks with several other interested customers and we see great potential in our products due to their very broad application portfolio. Among them, TMP can be used in the production of coatings, resins, UV-curable coatings, and polyurethane applications. ”
Competitive advantage
For example, Scopeblue products of adipic acid and 1,6-hexanediol are produced from bio-based or bio-recycled cyclohexane. As a result, they have a significantly improved carbon footprint compared to conventionally manufactured products. David, Head of Marketing, LANXESS AHP (Adipic Acid, 1,6-Hexanediol, Phthalic Anhydride)
Berhorst: “As early as 2021, LANXESS will be able to offer a certified carbon footprint for our product range for the first time and create added value for customers through this product transparency. Thanks to the two nitrous oxide The reduction facility breaks down the nitrous oxide produced during production, and LANXESS has already been able to produce these basic chemicals with significantly lower emissions than usual on the market. Now, using bio-based raw materials enables us to better satisfy our customers Demands for more sustainable, even CO2-neutral products.”
Open up new opportunities
Raw materials play a very important role in further improving the carbon footprint of POP products. Eric, Sustainability Manager, POP Business Line
Hendricks also emphasized this point. Therefore, LANXESS is working hard to replace more raw materials with “green” products. Eric
“There’s no replacement for everything,” Hendricks said. “We’re working on solutions here with partners across the value chain to position ourselves early on the supply side.”
Currently, the main demand for sustainable POP products comes from Europe. But Lanxess also sees potential in markets in Asia and the US, where rivals don’t yet have any green alternatives in their portfolios. Stephan
Deutsch concludes: “We definitely want to be a forerunner in sustainable development. In the coming years, the market will increasingly demand innovative, sustainable products. And if we lay the groundwork for this with products at the forefront of the value chain, There will be many new opportunities for our business.”
