BASF will present its ongoing plastic journey towards a circular economy and the sustainable management of plastics at the European Plastics Recycling and Sustainability Conference (PRSE) in 2023. The conference, to be held at the RAI Amsterdam on 10-11 May 2023, will bring together industry leaders, innovators and experts to discuss the latest opportunities and challenges facing the plastics recycling industry in Europe.
BASF will showcase its latest initiatives and solutions to promote a circular economy for plastics at PRSE booth D32. The company will present its high-performance solutions and complementary methods in the field of mechanical and chemical recycling to reduce the amount of unrecycled plastic waste.
In addition, BASF and its subsidiary trinamiX will participate in sessions at the show to share insights on the latest technologies and solutions for circular plastics.
Complementary solutions for mechanical recycling on one platform
BASF offers a range of product technologies to enable and improve mechanical recycling. Solutions from Plastic Additives, trinamiX and Chemetall are integrated on the newly designed platform mechanicalrecycling.com.
Additives designed to meet the circularity challenge of plastic packaging
Additives can enhance the circularity of plastics, enabling polymers to go through multiple cycles. The IrgaCycle® family of additives helps increase the recycling rate of plastics in multiple end-use applications such as packaging, automotive and mobile devices, building and construction. They also address common challenges associated with recycled resins, such as limited processability, and rejuvenate stable additive packages for packaging. BASF uses its extensive experience in the plastics industry to select suitable additive solutions and provide technical advice to help customers achieve their recycling goals. The IrgaCycle® range is part of the VALERAS® portfolio under which BASF markets its range of sustainable plastic additive solutions.
On-site identification of plastic types to enhance sorting
A key factor in establishing circularity lies in the first step in the recycling process: the clean sorting of plastic waste. To ensure that the separated waste has a high commercial value, it is important to know the types of polymers that make up the discarded plastic waste. With its mobile near-infrared spectroscopy solution, trinamiX, a BASF subsidiary, enables flexible on-site identification and ensures the cleanliness of plastic waste streams throughout recycling facilities. Demonstrations of the solution will take place at trinamiX's stand G3.
ChemetallCutting-edge cleaning solutions for mechanical recycling of plastics
Operating under the Chemetall brand name, the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF's Coatings division offers formulations and comprehensive cleaners designed to improve the quality, productivity and safety of the plastic recycling process. Chemetall's product range of cleaning agents, wetting agents and defoamers covers the entire cleaning and wastewater treatment process for plastics and PET recycling and complies with the strictest quality regulations. Gardoclean®, Gardobond® additives, Gardo® Pure and Gardofloc® will become the gold standard for optimizing cleaning and wastewater treatment processes.
These products enable safe washing of plastic waste. At the same time, the consumption of water and cleaning agents is reduced since most of the water can remain in the circulation system, be recycled and reused many times. Chemetall's technology meets the requirements of the food industry, is suitable for multilayer packaging films such as LDPE or HDPE, and effectively removes all types of adhesives.
PE/PAMultilayer film can be recycled
BASF is doing a lot with polyethylene/polyamide multilayer films: Coextruded polyethylene/polyamide film structures are certified mechanically recyclable as of autumn 2022. According to the Institute cyclos-HTP Research GmbH, Stiftung Zentrale Stelle The Verpackungsregister (Central Agency Packaging Register) has reclassified the recyclability of polyamides into the minimum standards. This is an important first step towards incorporating the benefits of polyamide-containing packaging and the latest findings on polyamide recyclability into the regulatory basis. As a major producer of Ultramid® extruded polyamides for multilayer films, BASF is involved in a project for the objective classification of polyamides for flexible packaging applications.
ChemCycling®: Complementary Solutions for High Performance Products
Chemical recycling complements mechanical recycling by focusing on plastic waste that cannot be recycled mechanically for technical, economic or ecological reasons. Combining mechanical and chemical recycling can increase overall recycling rates and contribute to a circular economy for plastics.
ChemCycling®, BASF's chemical recycling business, manufactures high-performance products for our customers from chemically recycled plastic waste on an industrial scale. By using a third-party audited mass balance method, the share of recycled raw materials is included in the products produced by Verbund. More than 200 certified products bear the suffix Ccycled® and offer the exact same performance as conventional products. Customers can thus further process them in the same way as conventional products and use them in demanding applications such as food and medical packaging, textiles or transport.
Resycure--A high-impact startup helping brand owners, processors and recyclers reach their goals
Resycure is a start-up from Chemovator, BASF's business incubator, dedicated to reducing plastic waste worldwide. Their approach is market-focused, assisting companies in the food, cosmetics and household cleaning sectors to secure their supply of recycled resin for packaging at fair prices and with reduced risk. In order to achieve this goal, Resycure aggregates the needs of these companies, accumulates to a considerable amount, and uses it to attract business and customers of recycling companies. In turn, recyclers can use this to invest in advanced technology, quality and production capacity. Resycure also connects recyclers with technology providers and favorable financing options to help them meet the needs of new customers.
