Arkema has raised its decarbonization target and its 1.5°C emission reduction path by 2030 has been certified by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) organization

Recently, on the basis of the strengthened climate plan in July 2022, Arkema has set a new and more ambitious goal for 2030, and applied it to the whole value chain, and has now obtained the scientific carbon goal (SBTi)* Organizational Certification. The Group's current goal is to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 48.5% and scope 3 emissions by 54% compared to 2019 by 2030.

In order to comply with the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit the increase in global average temperature to within 1.5 degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels by the end of this century, in July 2022, the Group formulated a new greenhouse gas emission reduction plan. Given the significant progress the Group has made in 2022, we have decided to increase our targets: by 2030, Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 48.5% compared to 2019, and Scope 3 emissions will be reduced by 54% compared to 2019. The new target has been certified by the independent global organization Science-Based Targets (SBTi)*.

Mr. Thierry Le Hénaff, Chairman and CEO of Arkema Group, said:

"Arkema has made a long-term commitment to combat climate change. This proactive line of action fully mobilizes all divisions of the Group, from energy procurement policy to industrial innovation, from the solution portfolio to the dissemination of climate and environmental culture , we are proud that the Group's new 2030 target has achieved SBTi certification."

For many years, the Group has been committed to pursuing energy efficiency at its industrial sites through the Arkema Energy Programme, and to developing low-carbon energy procurement. Given that the Group has determined to increase its scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, it plans to reduce from 3.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2019 to 1.9 million tons by 2030.

In order to fulfill the new commitment, the group's behavior plan will be developed around the following main programs:

Increase the proportion of low-carbon steam and low-carbon electricity used in plants, especially through cooperation with producers with long-term contracts. Arkema recently signed a major supply contract with ENGIE for the supply of 300GWh of biomethane per year at its French plant to further reduce its bio-based high-performance Rilsan® Carbon footprint of polyamide 11 and Pebax® Rnew® elastomer ranges; and

Improve energy efficiency and optimize facilities. Many projects in this area have been launched in 2022, such as the launch of a new generation of catalysts at the Lacq plant in France to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

In addition, to support this decarbonization plan, the Group expects to invest 400 million euros in decarbonization plans by 2030. For scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, the Group will take actions across the entire value chain, and plans to reduce emissions from 152 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2019 to 70 million tons in 2030. To achieve this goal, Arkema aims to increase its use of renewable or recycled raw materials, choose raw materials with a lower carbon footprint, reduce production activities with the largest emissions, and develop recycling channels for polymer products, for example through Virtucycle ® The recycling project and the acquisition of Agiplast were realized.

In addition, the Group harnesses the innovative power of sustainable development to further develop its products and services, striving to provide solutions that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
