On May 11, Clariant announced that in 2022, Clariant’s catalysts will help customers achieve emission reductions, equivalent to 8 times of Clariant’s own carbon footprint in the same year. According to Clariant, Clariant’s high-efficiency catalyst technology can make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change by 2022, reducing emissions of more than 35 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in customers’ processes. This emission reduction is equivalent to more than eight times the total carbon footprint of Clariant itself in 2022.

To look at it another way, the 35 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions avoided by using Clariant catalysts exceeds the total CO2 emissions of Switzerland in 2021.

A large part of this reduction comes from customers in the steel industry, which accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions. Clariant’s reforming catalysts are used in the direct reduced iron (DRI) process that feeds steel production. Compared with the traditional coal-based steelmaking process with high carbon dioxide emissions, the DRI process is a low-carbon alternative solution, and its CO2 emission is 38% lower than that of the traditional steelmaking process (equivalent to about 1 ton of CO2 emission per ton of crude steel. ).

Another key area of contribution for Clariant comes from the reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions during nitric acid production. Nitric acid is a high-value base chemical mainly used in fertilizer production. Greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide are by-products in the nitric acid production process, and the annual emissions of the entire industry are equivalent to up to 100 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Clariant catalysts provide an economical solution to eliminate up to 99% of N2O emissions by converting them into harmless nitrogen and oxygen
N2O. This technology is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce large-scale greenhouse gas emissions in the chemical industry, and its cost is much less than 10 US dollars per 1 ton of CO2 equivalent emission reduction.

Clariant Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer Richard Hall
Haldimann said: “With our clear sustainability strategy, Clariant’s product portfolio is well-positioned to help combat climate change. These product solutions not only help reduce our own carbon footprint, but also help our customers create Carbon Fingerprint (delivering carbon reductions to customers). Clariant Catalysts is an example of accelerating the energy transition through innovation driven by sustainability, while also meeting the needs of future economic, regulatory and social systems.”

Jens Yan, President of Clariant Catalysts
Cuntze, commented: “The vast majority of chemical and fuel industries undergo at least one catalytic process. Catalysts therefore have a profound impact not only on the productivity and profitability of chemical processes, but also on the sustainability of the industry. important role. At Clariant, we combine tailor-made catalyst solutions with strong process partnerships to achieve effective emissions reductions for our customers.”

Other recent catalytic innovations from Clariant include technologies for the production of green methanol and green ammonia, which open up entirely new avenues for renewable raw materials for the chemical industry as well as energy resources, especially in the marine sector. Clariant also develops catalysts for the efficient production of blue hydrogen (low-carbon hydrogen), which safely and efficiently captures and stores carbon, thereby permanently removing CO2 for storage or further utilization.

Through existing and future technologies, Clariant is committed to developing innovative catalytic solutions that enable customers to operate their plants more efficiently with less CO2 emissions. The emission reduction of more than 35 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2022 demonstrates Clariant’s vision to help its customers transition to global climate neutrality. Under the guidance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – 7th Affordable Clean Energy and 13th Climate Action Guidelines, Clariant will continue to focus on the innovation of catalytic technologies.
