Avante s Enhanced Virtual Simulation Capabilities Support Use of Polymer Materials in Structural Applications

April 14, 2023--Today, Avant Corporation announced the launch of its latest upgrade to advanced computer-aided engineering (CAE) capabilities. With these enhanced capabilities, Avantec can now help customers more accurately predict the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer materials in applications where they replace metal structural parts, reducing design iterations and speeding time to market.

This predictive simulation technique incorporates traditional (isotropic) and advanced (anisotropic) modeling data from material characterization, mold filling analysis, and finite element analysis (FEA). Virtual simulation can be based on static and dynamic data to more accurately predict the likely cracking or breaking of injection molded plastic parts when subjected to physical load forces or sudden impacts (crash simulation). Sophisticated modeling software can also take temperature and humidity levels into account. These enhanced capabilities can help further optimize part design and material selection, reduce risk, improve performance, and lower costs in the early stages of development.

Particularly useful for structural applications, the new functionality complements an existing suite of comprehensive design and technical services, improving Avantec's ability to simulate the expected performance of short-fiber, long-fiber and continuous-fiber composites. In addition, advanced modeling can help manufacturers and molders better identify and resolve potential defects, evaluate performance before investing in tooling equipment or physical testing, and understand component characteristics or overall system operation.

Amit Kulkarni, Global Technical Director, Specialty Engineered Materials, Avantec, said: "The goal from the beginning of the design process is to help customers simplify application development, increase speed to market, and increase confidence in the performance of reinforced polymer materials in structural applications. This enables customers to replace metal with plastic and take advantage of sustainability benefits through lightweight, design freedom and easier processing."

To demonstrate the increased accuracy of finite element analysis capabilities, Avantec tested and analyzed the performance of an injection molded automotive connecting rod, which is traditionally a metal, using isotropic and anisotropic materials for comparison. part. See the results and benefits of predictive simulation technology in this case study. In addition, designers can use Hexagon's Digimat™-MX (Material Exchange) software platform to capture material data and models and apply them to Avant's growing range of fiber-reinforced solutions. Currently, there are 168 long fiber models available for Avant materials, accounting for nearly half of the long fiber models in Digimat.
