Infineon Technologies, an internationally renowned semiconductor company headquartered in Munich, Germany, issued a communiqué on the 3rd that it had signed a long-term supply agreement with Beijing Tianke Heda Semiconductor Co., Ltd., a Chinese supplier of silicon carbide materials, to ensure Obtain more competitive sources of silicon carbide and maintain the stability of the overall supply chain.
Silicon carbide is a semiconductor material with excellent performance. Compared with similar silicon-based devices, silicon carbide devices have the advantages of high temperature resistance, high voltage resistance, good high frequency characteristics, small size and light weight, and have important application value in electric vehicles, photovoltaics, 5G and other industrial fields.
The communique stated that Tianke Heda will provide Infineon with 6-inch silicon carbide crystals for the production of silicon carbide semiconductors, which account for a considerable share in long-term demand forecasts.
Infineon Chief Procurement Officer Angelique Vanderburg said that Infineon is currently doubling its investment in silicon carbide technology and product portfolio. Against this background, the company is implementing a multi-supplier and multi-country procurement strategy , to enhance supply chain resilience to benefit a broad customer base.
According to Chen Xiaolong, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the chief scientist of Tianke Heda, the research and development team can produce high-quality bulk silicon carbide crystals through the traditional "gas phase method" and the new "liquid phase method". After unremitting research, the diameter of the manufactured silicon carbide crystals has gradually increased from less than 10 mm to 2 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches and 8 inches (1 inch is about 25.4 mm), effectively reducing the unit cost.
It is reported that this Chinese research and development team lasted nearly 20 years, from basic research, applied research to achievement transformation, and formed a technical route with independent intellectual property rights.
