Wang Shouwen, International Trade Negotiator and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce of China, said on the 23rd that China has the willingness and ability to join the "Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement" (CPTPP). All member states can support China's accession to CPTPP.
Wang Shouwen said at the regular policy briefing of the State Council held on the same day that China has carried out pilot projects and experiments in some free trade pilot zones and free trade ports in accordance with the high standards of CPTPP rules, standards, and management. When the conditions are ripe, it will be promoted on a larger scale. Therefore, China is capable of fulfilling its CPTPP obligations.
He said that joining the CPTPP is in the interests of China, in the interests of all CPTPP members, and in the interests of economic recovery in the Asia-Pacific region and even the world. For China, joining the CPTPP is conducive to further expanding opening up, deepening reform, and promoting high-quality development. For the current 11 members of CPTPP, China's accession means that the consumers of CPTPP member countries will triple, which will be a huge market access opportunity for member countries, and the total GDP will increase by 1.5 times.
Wang Shouwen said that the FTAAP has two "wheels", one is the "Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement" (RCEP) and the other is the CPTPP. Both RCEP and CPTPP are already in effect. As a member of RCEP, if China joins the CPTPP, it will help these two "wheels" to move forward, help the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, and contribute to the regional economic integration of the entire region and the stability of the industrial and supply chains in the region. Safety, reliability and efficiency are paramount.
