Contribute to sustainable innovation
LANXESS is committed to taking innovation as a strong driving force for business development, so as to empower the green transformation of local partners and the sustainable development of the industrial chain. In 2021, LANXESS launched its Asia-Pacific Application Development Center in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, becoming the first project of Shanghai International Chemical New Materials Innovation Center, contributing to Shanghai’s goal of building a “science and technology innovation center with global influence”. a force.
Less than half a year after its opening, the center cooperated with the neighboring ROHM Asia Technology Center to renovate the central axis walkway in the central garden of the Shanghai International Chemical New Materials Innovation Center with sustainable inorganic pigment products from LANXESS.
At the same time, LANXESS Asia Pacific Application Development Center also cooperates with LANXESS business departments to carry out upward integration of innovative products and provide local customers with a highly flexible product model. For example, since LANXESS officially launched its new production line of water-based compound coatings in Nantong in November 2019, LANXESS Asia Pacific Application Development Center has been supporting the rapid development and scale of products and providing customized solutions for customers.
Making the entire value chain climate neutral
In addition to technological innovation, enterprises need to play their role in reducing carbon emissions and take more responsibilities throughout the value chain. According to the calculation of the Global Environmental Information Research Center (CDP), the carbon emission level of the supply chain can reach more than five times the direct emission of enterprises. Carbon reduction is a systematic project, and it is difficult for a single company to promote the overall process.
To encourage supply chain partners to reduce carbon emissions, LANXESS has set a scope 3 emission target for 2022. In combination with the company’s strategy, LANXESS has played its part in uniting upstream and downstream companies in the value chain to gradually achieve carbon reduction targets.
LANXESS plans to make its upstream and downstream supply chains climate neutral by 2050. This includes indirect emissions, especially from purchased raw materials, but also from logistics and final products. By 2030, Scope 3 emissions will be reduced by 40% from the base year of 2015, from 27,000 ktCO2e to 16,500 ktCO2e. For direct emissions from production (Scope 1) and emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), LANXESS set itself three years ago with the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040.
In order to achieve this goal, LANXESS has also launched the strategy “Net Zero Value Chain Plan”, which aims to achieve climate neutrality throughout the value chain. The initiative supports customers who are increasingly looking for sustainable solutions by shifting the product portfolio towards climate neutrality by switching to sustainable raw materials, “green” logistics and a climate-neutral product portfolio.
