In the past, most anti-vandal doors at security checkpoints or retail store exits used bulky gray grille or column structures, which lacked visual aesthetics. Checkpoint system (Checkpoint
Systems) company’s new generation anti-theft system adopts a new solution: the shell of NS40 and NS42 vandal-resistant doors is made of special light-scattering PLEXIGLAS®, which allows the anti-theft device to seamlessly integrate into the retail environment, while presenting an elegant and attractive appearance. Gloss effect.

Explore better lighting effects

Checkpoint has created a product that combines outstanding performance and aesthetics, allowing the anti-theft device to fully integrate into the store furnishings and become an integral part of the overall design. the company’s industrial designer ben
Rubinstein explains: “Our goal has always been to provide aesthetically pleasing products that help our customers stand out from the competition, so we decided to revamp a range of immobilizers. Older models were ugly when the alarm sounded – the lights were unevenly lit when the anti-theft feature was triggered, and there were harsh bead ‘hot spots’.” So Rubinstein set out to find a more uniform light effect on the anti-theft device. material and luckily discovered PLEXIGLAS® molding compound.

The softlight light-scattering shell is black when it is not lit, and it can present the color specified by the company when it is lit, and it will turn bright red when the anti-theft alarm is triggered.

With NS40 and NS42, Checkpoint
Systems provides the most discreet Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) systems for the retail industry. Efficient and aesthetically pleasing, the thin cylindrical anti-theft device blends elegantly and discreetly into store furnishings, especially in high-end boutiques.

Outstanding light scattering

“I quickly realized that PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds had exactly the properties we needed,” recalls Rubinstein, who was developing an innovative Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) system for retail food stores at the time. Unlike bulky, conspicuous vandal-resistant doors, this new system consists of just one elegant pole. LED light tube in the tip with injection molded gray PLEXIGLAS®
Softlight housing. Neville Green, New Business Development Manager at Rohm, explains: “This specialty molding compound scatters light particularly well, preventing hot spots.
The LED lamp bead shell can achieve uniform light effect under the condition of thinner components. “Component thickness is Checkpoint
The key factors that Systems need to consider are that the NS40 and NS42 products are small in appearance and clean in lines, so the gap between the LED lamp bead and the housing is extremely small.

Rubinstein added: “The LED bead is only a few millimeters away from the housing material. At this distance, the scattering properties of other plastics will quickly reach the limit, but PLEXIGLAS® molding compound can be evenly distributed no matter how close to the LED bead. Astigmatism, it’s like magic to me.”

Durable Multi-purpose

When the warning light is not on, the black appearance of the PLEXIGLAS® molding compound blends elegantly with the discreetly designed pole. However, when the light source is activated, the pole presents a combination of light colors of your choice, and when a suspected thief crosses the anti-theft device, an alarm will be triggered and the pole will turn red.

Another advantage that convinced Checkpoint to choose Rohm was the material’s high resistance. PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is one of the hardest thermoplastic materials with a good surface resistance to chemicals such as cleaning agents. “Anti-theft systems at store exits are subject to a lot of wear and tear,” says Rubinstein. “Our EAS systems at security checkpoints had to be durable and last at least ten years. Not only does this echo our customers’ growing commitment to sustainability , which is also in line with Checkpoint’s corporate philosophy. We are working towards a true circular economy, and to do so, almost all the plastic we use must be recyclable.”

This is also the outstanding property of PLEXIGLAS®: ROHM’s PMMA material is durable, inherently sustainable and 100% recyclable. This combination of features was one of the decisive factors that led Checkpoint to partner with Rohm. Because of this, Rubinstein believes that the two parties are likely to carry out more project cooperation in the future. He concluded: “We have many potential application fields suitable for PLEXIGLA® products, and we will explore more in-depth cooperation opportunities with ROHM in the future.”
