On March 14, 2023, LyondellBasell announced that it has successfully started up the world’s largest propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butanol (TBA) plant in Texas. The new units, located on the US Gulf Coast, can produce 470,000 tons of PO and 1 million tons of TBA and its derivatives per year.

The PO/TBA project has a split design to optimize production and utilize the LyondellBasell Channelview complex in Channelview, Texas and the LyondellBasell Bayport complex in Pasadena, Texas synergy between them. 140-acre PO/TBA plant built in Channelview
complex, while the associated 34-acre ethers plant is being built at the Bayport complex, which will convert TBA to oxygenated fuel.

According to the Partnership’s analysis, LyondellBasell’s PO/TBA program is estimated to generate more than $450 million in tax dividends over 10 years for the county, school district, community college and other local tax districts.
The development of LyondellBasell’s PO/TBA business began at the Bayport complex, with the first PO/TBA unit commissioned in 1969. Through 50+ years of experience in global PO/TBA operations, and new innovations in yield enhancement and PO recovery, located in Channelview
The complex’s PO/TBA plant is currently the most energy efficient PO/TBA facility in the company’s history.
Propylene oxide (PO)
PO can be used to make polyurethane foam, which is commonly used to make mattresses, car and furniture upholstery. It is also used to make insulation to improve the energy efficiency of homes and businesses.
Other common end uses for these products include liquid detergents, toothpaste, cosmetics, paints and spandex fabrics.
tert-butanol (TBA)
TBA can be converted into two ether-based oxygenated fuels, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE). Both MTBE and ETBE are high-octane fuel additives that help gasoline burn more efficiently, reducing vehicle emissions.
