DSM Engineered Materials has announced a collaboration with DiFOLD, a start-up focused on sustainability, to develop foldable and reusable products. The start-up chooses Arnitel® from DSM Engineered Materials
Eco, a bio-based thermoplastic copolymer, to make its flagship product, the Origami collapsible water bottle. Using Arnitel®
The ECO material marks a major step forward for DiFOLD in reducing the environmental impact of packaging waste.

Inspired by the Japanese art of origami, the patented and award-winning design of DiFOLD’s Origami water bottle can be folded down to less than 10% of its original volume, greatly improving user convenience and reducing the carbon footprint of shipping. The Origami water bottle is a durable, reusable and recyclable alternative to single-use water bottles that helps avoid plastic packaging waste. And, since the bottle is made of Arnitel® from DSM Engineered Materials
Made of Eco, its environmental benefits are even greater.

Arnitel®
Eco is a bio-based thermoplastic copolymer derived in part from renewable canola oil. This significantly reduces the CO2 emissions of the material from cradle to port. Compared to conventional copolymers, the material has a 50% smaller carbon footprint. The measurement is based on an in-depth life cycle assessment (LCA) that includes each stage of material production from the growth of the raw crop to the finished product leaving the plant.

These qualities make Arnitel® Eco material ideal for DiFOLD’s Origami water bottle. According to DiFOLD co-founders Radina Popova and Petar
Circularity and durability were key factors to consider when choosing materials for their unique product, Zaharinov said. Radina Popova and Petar
“We wanted a bio-based material that could be recycled and had the specific mechanical properties required for the folding design. We are happy that Arnitel®
Eco offers the perfect balance of elasticity, formability and circularity. ”

Arnitel®
Eco has high performance with very low environmental impact. It is bisphenol A (BPA) free and can withstand temperatures of -30°C and +100°C. And it won’t absorb liquid odors or tastes for a long lifespan. In addition, Arnitel®
Eco can also be recycled without any loss in the quality of the recycled material. This is critical to helping DiFOLD achieve its goal of establishing a closed-loop recycling system for its products. DSM Engineered Materials in addition to offering Arnitel®
In addition to Eco materials, DiFOLD also provided sustainable development advice, technical advice and regulatory compliance services.

Pim, Marketing Manager, Food Contact, Water Contact and Appliances Market, DSM Engineered Materials
Janssen said: “We are delighted that our services and materials can help DiFOLD fulfill their mission to minimize the environmental impact of packaging – a topic we focus on. By helping the value chain to de-petroleumize, Arnitel®
Eco contributes to creating a circular economy of materials. ”
