Evonik has signed an agreement to provide expanded production of custom catalysts at Rohm’s new methyl methacrylate (MMA) production plant in Bay City, Texas, USA, which is scheduled to be operational in 2024.
“This agreement re-emphasizes our commitment and capabilities in the field of custom catalysts. We are delighted to be working with the Rohm team to achieve commercial-scale production of MMA,” said Sanjeev Taneja, Head of Catalysts Division at Evonik.
“These catalysts play a key role in ROHM’s newly developed LiMA technology, which enables the production of MMA with high resource efficiency and low environmental impact. In many respects, LiMA sets new standards and is the most efficient MMA ever developed production technology.
Compared to other MMA processes, LiMA technology offers significant advantages in terms of sustainability, as it enables high yields with low energy consumption and reduced wastewater discharge.
MMA and its derivatives are important precursors in industries such as automotive, electronics, medical and construction, including the production of PLEXIGLAS and special applications such as contact lenses and adhesives.
