On December 1, 2023, during COP28, German industrial giant ThyssenKrupp Group Uhde won a contract for a biopolymer plant from a company in the United Arab Emirates.

, GBI) plans to build a large-scale biopolymer factory in the Arabian Peninsula, which will be the first large-scale biopolymer factory in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The contract includes a basic engineering package (BEP) and a front-end engineering design (FEED) package, and ThyssenKrupp subsidiary Uhde
Inventa-Fischer will perform BEP for PLA production based on its proprietary state-of-the-art technology and its sister company thyssenkrupp Uhde
India will execute the FEED, which covers the entire production complex, including associated off-site and utility facilities.
The plant uses lactic acid from corn as the main raw material to produce polylactic acid (PLA) polymer on an industrial scale. The design focuses on rigorous optimization of raw material utilization at all stages: from starch conversion to lactic acid production and finally polylactic acid production.
