Covestro develops reliable UV-resistant plastic compound

At the 2016 German plastics industry exhibition – K2016, Covestro will present sustainable and innovative solutions based on fiber-reinforced polyurethane and polycarbonate materials. To take full advantage of the advantages of composite materials, the best performing fiber-bonded materials must be used. Polyurethane materials are steadily developing in this market segment due to their excellent performance.

Covestro develops reliable UV-resistant plastic composite

At K2016, Covestro launched a new polyurethane adhesive, specially designed for composite materials, which has excellent UV protection function, as well as excellent weather resistance and chemical resistance. The product, called Desmocomp, is based on aliphatic isocyanates and is perfectly suited for outdoor applications. It eliminates the need for additional surface protection materials such as coatings, UV absorbers, UV-blocking mats or films.

Excellent performance

The new adhesive material has a long shelf life and fast curing speed, so its process cost is extremely low. Like other polyurethane materials, Desmocomp also exhibits high reactivity, variable viscosity and high bond strength. It saturates glass fibers effectively, producing long-lasting high-strength properties. In addition, the material is anti-graffiti and flame retardant.

These advantages have opened the door for Desmocomp to the market for outdoor applications. For example, Desmocomp is currently being used in the manufacture of components for light commercial vehicles. Covestro’s development partner, Sortimo International GmbH, will present composite parts made with the new adhesive at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover, Germany, September 22-29.

The automotive part on display is the side element in Sortimo’s new System-Unit, which has excellent stability, durability and weather resistance, and is an ideal part to meet the needs of pickup trucks and flatbed trucks.
