Let’s talk about Iran today.
No matter what level you look at, Iran is a great treasure. There have been too many disputes throughout the ages, and it has always been a good topic for everyone to talk about after dinner. Speaking in an anthropomorphic way, Iran, she is not a female classmate without a story.
Facing a female classmate who is full of stories, of course, I have to understand it slowly from point to point; and my first step to understand Iran is to start with the customs data of polyether.
From the export data from January to March 2018, the export volume of polyether to Iran has been ranked outside the top five destination countries, and even ranked eleventh in March. The monthly export volume is basically stable at around 1100 tons. However, since April, China’s polyether exports to Iran have been increasing. In April, the export volume of polyether to Iran was about 2,000 tons, ranking fourth after India, Vietnam, and South Korea; in May, it ranked third after South Korea and India; in June, polyether to Iran The export volume reached 4,500 tons, making it the largest exporter of the month.
The main reason is, of course, that the United States has imposed sanctions on Iran a while ago, and its allies such as Japan, South Korea and Europe were also forced to stop trade with Iran, and China (because it happened to be in conflict with the United States, so) made up for it Iranian market.
Let’s turn back the timeline a little bit, back to the early summer of this year, and talk about the US economic sanctions against Iran and its past and present.
On May 8, 2018, Trump announced his unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, and at the same time signed a presidential memorandum to resume economic sanctions on Iran.
The love-hate relationship between the United States and Iran has a long history, and it is nothing short of wonderful. If their love and killing each other were written into a story, it must be an epic sadomasochism story. However, it is not convenient for us to talk about it here. The farthest, it only goes back to 1979.
In 1979, China experienced the spring of reform and opening up, while the Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran. On November 4, Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy and took U.S. diplomats hostage. After the hostage crisis, the United States and Iran ended their 30-year alliance and turned hostile. The United States began various sanctions against Iran for nearly 40 years.
For example, freezing the property of the Iranian government and its controlled subjects; for example, prohibiting the sale of dual-use items to Iran, prohibiting the provision of international multilateral loans to Iran, and stopping funding international organizations that provide aid to Iran; for example, prohibiting any business Investing more than 20 million U.S. dollars in Iran’s oil industry, and prohibiting the supply of equipment for oil and gas development and production to Iran; another example is financial sanctions such as prohibiting domestic banks from providing services to Iran’s sanctioned targets.
Starting from President Carter, to Reagan, Clinton, Bush Jr., to Obama and now Trump, the sanctions against Iran can be described as advancing with the times and refurbished, which can be called a textbook of economic sanctions. But Iran is indeed wild. It can be said that barefoot is not afraid of wearing shoes. It has the courage to confront US imperialism. This kind of “proud and indulgent” really makes the editor admire. So far, Iran is one of the few countries that has not established diplomatic relations with the United States.
Say back to May of this year. After the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, it began to impose economic sanctions on Iran. Japan, South Korea and other countries have been forced to cut off economic exchanges with Iran. This is also reflected in the polyether market – for example, in June this year, due to the loss of the Iranian market, some polyether manufacturers in South Korea turned to sell at low prices in the Middle East and Africa POP polyether.
The current world situation is like a little politics in a class. Kidswant United States said that Iranian students were not pleasing to the eye, so they forced other students not to bring Iran to play. But among them, a few classmates happened to have a delicate relationship with Kidswant, so they still maintained normal friendly exchanges with Iran. Like Russia, or China.
According to a report on the website of Iran News TV on May 11, China launched a freight train service connecting northern China and Tehran, the capital of Iran, on May 10. This freight train will carry Bayan, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The goods from Naur traveled about 8,000 kilometers, passing through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and it took about two weeks to arrive in Tehran, Iran.
The polyether export customs data mentioned at the beginning of this article can also confirm this point: since May, China’s polyether export to Iran has grown rapidly; in June, the polyether export volume to Iran ranked first.
This kind of friendly economic exchanges between China and Iran has a long history. During the Iran-Iraq War in 1980, China maintained a neutral attitude, and the two countries have maintained relatively good diplomatic exchanges since then. After Deng Xiaoping’s speech on the southern tour in 1992, China’s economy developed rapidly, and in 1993In the beginning, China changed from an oil exporter to a pure oil importer, when Iran used crude oil to pay for goods imported from China. In recent years, China’s three major oil giants – CNOOC, PetroChina and Sinopec have all negotiated and invested with Iran on oil and gas development. According to an article, 40% of Iran’s petrochemical products and 70% of its polymer products are exported to China; during the period of isolation by the United States, half of Iran’s oil was sold to China, and China then exported processed refined oil to Iran; Iran is also China’s largest exporter of automobiles, and it is the country that imports the largest number of Chinese automobiles in the world. China has become Iran’s largest trading partner.
The latest news shows that in response to the US economic sanctions, Iran introduced a series of import bans in June. Among them, 1,339 items including clothing, textiles, automobiles, shoes, bags, and some domestically produced machinery and equipment have been included in the list of prohibited imports, with the purpose of supporting local Iranian products and managing currency outflows. How the import ban has affected China’s exports to Iran, whether it has a greater impact on the exports of our polyurethane industry, and where the trade cooperation between China and Iran will go, we will wait and see about these series of issues.
